The Lone Star Republic -Don Gray, reporting from San Antonio de Bexar, Texas, November 30, 1835 THE STORY OF JUAN SEQUIN, A NATIVE TEXAN AND A VOLUNTEER AT BEXAR Juan Seguín, age 29, is a true Texas patriot and respected by both his Tejano and Anglo peers in Bexar. He joined the volunteers in Bexar in October and is anxious to rid Texas of the Mexican Army. Juan was born here in San Antonio de Bexar on October 27, 1806. He was the older of two sons of Erasmo Seguín and María Josefa Becerra. As the son of a postmaster, he assisted his mother in the business, while his father was away in Mexico City writing the 1824 Constitution of Mexico. In 1825, he married and has several children. Juan was elected an alderman in December, 1828 and served on numerous electoral boards before becoming the San Antonio alcalde (mayor) in December 1833. He then served as political chief and mayor of Bexar until 1834, after the previous chief became ill. Just this year, he led a relief force to Monclova, Mexico when Federalist Governor Agustín Viesca appealed for help. As a teenager, Juan had a strong interest in politics. When Santa Anna repealed the Mexican Constitution of 1824, Juan was very critical this action and he joined the Texas Revolution to rid Texas of Santa Anna's rule. In recent months Juan has been very successful in recruiting volunteers to assist with our siege at Bexar. He was commissioned a captain by Stephen F. Austin in October and was be tasked with the burden of supplying the Texan troops with food and provisions. Juan also sent out scouting parties to the missions of Bexar in search of a suitable base camp for the volunteers at Bexar and participated in the early successful Battle of Concepcion at Mission Concepcion here in Bexar on October 28. Juan is devoted to returning the Constitution of 1824 to his home state and freeing Bexar from Santa Anna’s hand. -Don Gray
