Today in Texas History
On the trail to Texas independence.
Feb 28, 1836 – Col Juan Seguín and his relief forces waiting on the Cibolo Creek encounter the Goliad advance force led by Francis L. DeSauque and John M. Chenoweth. They inform Seguin that Fannin was en route to relieve the Alamo defenders and should only be about two days away, not knowing that Fannin had returned to Goliad.

DAY SIX IN THE SEIGE AT THE ALAMO
The 6th day of the siege brought no relief for the 150 defenders of the Alamo. Mexican cannon fire continues to crumble the Alamo’s fortifications. Some one hundred cannon rounds were shot today at the Alamo. No Texian casualties were reported. The Alamo’s exterior walls enclose some 3 acres of land which require much more than its present 150 men to defend. Sources indicate that the Mexican army now totals near 3,000 men and is increasing daily as troops arrive. The Texians are short on cannonballs and are limiting their counter cannon fire to only three to five rounds per day. Texian rifle sharpshooters continue to be successful at 200-300 yards against the Mexican troops that try to advance close to the Alamo.
The Mexican Army received intelligence that 200 Texian reinforcements from Goliad are en route to the Alamo.
The morale within the compound seems high. According to Mrs. Suzanna Dickinson, David Crockett took up a fiddle and challenged 2nd Sergeant John McGregor, a Scot with bagpipes, to a contest of instruments that was enjoyed by all.
DELEGATES BEGIN GATHERING FOR THE CONVENTION OF 1836
Today delegates began riding into Washington-on-the-Brazos to attend the Convention of 1836 that comes to order on March 1. It is thought that most of the delegates are loyal to the War Party which loathes Santa Anna and believes that only independence from Mexico will fulfill the destiny of Texas.
