LT. COL. NEILL STEPS DOWN AT THE ALAMO, APPOINTS WILLIAM B. TRAVIS TO COMMAND REGULAR ARMY AND THE VOLUNTEERS AT THE ALAMO
The command at the Alamo changed hands today with Lt. Col. William B. Travis (see photo below) assuming the leadership of the 150 troops here.
Travis was placed in command by Lt. Col. James Neill, the outgoing commander. Neill stepped down because he had learned that a terrible sickness has befallen his family and he must leave Bexar to care for them. Neill is very popular among his men and they report that he will be dearly missed. Neill promised his men that he would return with supplies within 20 days at the longest. The volunteer portion of the troops at the Alamo (some 100 of the total 150 troops) seem hesitant to accept Travis and his formalities. The volunteers have been accustomed to electing their own leaders and seem more favorable to James Bowie.
